MTX is currently close to completing, working for Pro Cure 21 principal supply chain partner Laing O’Rourke, a new modular surgical unit comprising two ultra-clean theatres and two 16-bed wards for the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The specialist bespoke modular healthcare facility contractor has completed all the ground works for the unit, at Stepping Hill Hospital, and has recently finished lifting the110 pre-fabricated modules into position. The challenging internal fit-out of the three-storey building has also gone fully according to programme. From start to finish the £10 m project had an on-site schedule of just 27 weeks. In modular construction, buildings are manufactured and fitted out in a controlled factory environment while the foundations are being constructed on-site. MTX says the overall scheme delivery and construction periods utilising this type of building system can be up to 40% quicker than a comparative traditional build. The completed facility will comply with all necessary building regulations, HBNs and HTMs, culminating, MTX says, in “a great example of off-site modular construction with a minimum design life of 60 years”. “Staff and patients will be unaware of the use of modular construction both in external appearance and perceived feel of the structure”.
