WSP UK Ltd has secured an appointment for a new £64 million Surgical Centre which will be constructed at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.
Working for the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, WSP will provide core design services for mechanical, electrical, civil and structural engineering. Additional services will include specialist advice related to BREEAM assessments, fire engineering, geotechnical engineering and acoustics.

The hospital has been undergoing a substantial modernisation programme since the late 1980’s. The next major stage of the works is the provision of the new Surgical Centre, which will comprise, a new five storey ward building, two buildings to accommodate new theatres, a sterile services unit, offices, a critical care unit and Surgical Investigation Unit.  The refurbishment of the ground floor of the existing Queen’s Building will provide an acute assessment unit linked to the existing accident and emergency department to form an emergency hub in the hospital.
The new Surgical Centre will be designed as a state-of-the-art facility, enabling staff to provide modern, patient-centred services.  All adult patients referred for emergency or urgent medical or surgical assessment will be seen in the Acute Assessment Unit.  The Ward building will provide inpatient beds, all in single, ensuite bedrooms; it will also include a gastro-intestinal ward integrating medical as well as surgical services.  New clinical office accommodation will be largely open plan.

Design for sustainability is a key requirement for the Trust, which has targeted 20% incorporation by value of recycled materials and the implementation of sustainable design principles such as minimising waste and low energy consumption to minimise the Trust’s carbon footprint.
