Drivers Jonas appointed to advise on Britain’s oldest hospital

Drivers Jonas LLP have been appointed by Barts and the London NHS Trust to advise on property issues in respect of its retained estate.

Drivers Jonas LLP have been appointed by Barts and the London NHS Trust to advise on property issues in respect of its retained estate.  The Trust’s estate comprises St Bartholomew’s in the City (Britain’s oldest hospital founded 1123), The Royal London in Whitechapel (founded 1740), and The London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green (founded 1740).
The Trust is a teaching hospital, working closely with The Medical School to train Doctors and Dentists.  The Trust employs some 10,000 people including some of Britain’s leading medical specialists.
The Trust’s full portfolio of specialist centres includes the country’s biggest heart attack centre, leading edge cancer specialists, one of the UK’s largest hospitals, and a highly successful fertility centre.  Home to London’s air ambulance, Barts and the London is also one of the capital’s leading trauma and emergency care centres.
Key to the Trust’s strategic plans is the development of new hospitals on both The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s sites.  Following final approval of the PFI scheme by the Department of Health in March 2006, construction is now underway on both sites.  The development proposals are spread over three phases with the final phase of construction set to complete in 2016.
DJ will provide estate strategy advice in respect of the retained estate including advice on:
-         Maximising income through property assets;
-         Planning advice in respect of earmarked sites for disposal or retention with reference to the UDP/Local Development Framework;
-         General town planning advice;
-         Development advice in respect of the UDP;
-         Market valuations/appraisals;
-         Advise the Trust as both lessor and lessee on rent reviews and landlord and tenant issues;
-         Party wall and neighbourly matter issues; and
-         Dilapidations.
The term of contract is three years and DJ’s success was supported by experience elsewhere in the sector as estate advisors to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and South London Maudsley NHS Trust.
The DJ team is led by Mike Jones, Jon Milward and Martin West from the DJ health sector team.
Lead Partner Mike Jones commented “We are delighted to win this commission despite tough competition.  It supplements the work we are doing with other London estates and demonstrates DJ’s extensive experience in this complicated and challenging London development arena”.
