Children at the Leicester Children’s Hospital, at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, are benefiting from a new 528 m2 rooftop play area supplied by Newark-based installer of impact-absorbing surfacing for playgrounds Playtop.
Playtop was contracted to install the surfacing, on the roof of the fourth floor children’s ward, after Leicester Hospitals Charity secured funding form a number of sources.
The surface design was led by Leicester Children’s Hospital, which wanted a free-flowing, creative surface that would encourage, but not dictate, the activities chosen. Another factor was users ranging from babies to adolescents. It was decided that the surface should incorporate green areas with insects, daisies, and an area of rainbow colours.
Once the roof was prepared Playtop, with the help of Wates Construction, lifted the equipment and materials onto a spare section of roof and made a start on the project. Three crane lifts were required during the 10-day installation.
