No drama for modular theatre

When pressure on operating theatres at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital saw the hospital’s design team face the challenge of finding space for a new theatre, bespoke modular healthcare facility contractor MTX Contracts devised a solution.

The new “number six” theatre was positioned within the centre of a light well, with fast-track building techniques recommended as the most cost-effective, efficient way forward. MTX began manufacturing the modular buildings in a controlled factory environment while the groundworks were prepared. A co-ordinated plan subsequently saw the buildings manoeuvred from North East England into London. The theatre is situated in the middle of a five-storey building, requiring a 500- tonne crane to lift the 14 prefabricated modules and associated mechanical and electrical equipment into position. The project also required installation of concrete floors throughout the theatre suite and plant room. The theatre was designed with sufficient flexibility to accommodate both current trends and future technological advances. MTX also designed a bespoke steel perimeter walkway to provide easy plant room access. The new theatre was completed on time and within budget, with minimal disruption to the hospital environment.
