Renovation should cut energy costs

South West England architect Quattro Design placed considerable importance on maximising levels of natural daylight, promoting cross-ventilation, and using solar glazing to limit unwanted solar gains, thus “dramatically reducing” the use of artificial lighting and avoiding any need for mechanical ventilation or cooling, in its scheme for the renovation of the Petherton Resource Centre in the Hengrove area of Bristol.

The new community mental health facilities have been built for Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust by ISG Pearce, with Quattro designing a new east wing, and renovating the existing 1960s structure. The building features an open plan working environment and incorporates private offices and meeting rooms. Substantial improvements were made to the building envelope, the most significant being replacement of all windows with high performance aluminium, double-glazed units, a thermal upgrade to the roof, and replacement of the heating system, with a high degree of zonal control introduced.
