Medway NHS Foundation Trust has been allocated £4,761,000 from the government’s Estates Safety Fund for 2025/2026, to help it make some of the hospital buildings at the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham safer.
The money forms part of £750 million of capital funding recently announced by the Government to address critical infrastructure and safety risks in NHS hospital buildings.
At Medway Maritime Hospital, the funding will help the Trust:
- install new cooling equipment to prevent equipment failure.
- replace an on-call system on the maternity ward to improve patient safety.
- replace old flooring to comply with infection prevention and control standards.
- make improvements to the neonatal intensive care unit.
- create changing facilities in the maternity areas, and
- make adjustments to working and storage space to make it compliant.
Neil McElduff, the Trust’s director of Estates and Facilities, said: “We welcome the news that we have successfully been allocated £4.7 million through government funding. Our Estates and Facilitates Team has worked hard over the last few months to secure this much-needed investment. This funding is crucial to help us make sure our patients, visitors, and staff, are in buildings that are safe, comfortable and fit for purpose, and aligns with our vision to continually improve our services.”
