WSP UK is to provide core design services for mechanical, electrical, civil and structural engineering, and specialist advice on BREEAM assessments, fire engineering, geotechnical engineering and acoustics, for a new £64 million surgical centre to be built at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton for the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust
The latest stage in a substantial ongoing modernisation programme, the centre will comprise a new five-storey ward building, two buildings to accommodate new theatres, a sterile services unit, offices, a critical care unit, and a surgical investigation unit. Refurbishment of the existing Queen’s Building’s ground floor will provide an acute assessment unit linked to the existing accident and emergency department to form an emergency hub. The new ward building will provide inpatient beds, all in single, en suite bedrooms, and include a gastrointestinal ward. Sustainable design is a key requirement for the Trust, which has, for instance, targeted 20% incorporation by value of recycled materials
