BIFM restructures and recruits for a sustainable future

The British Institute of Facilities Management is overhauling its staff structure and making several key appointments to ensure it can meet the challenges of both its own strategy and the current economic climate.

The changes include the creation of a new Chief Operating Officer position, new heads of business units and changed roles for BIFM's executive directors. The new management and staff structure took effect from 15th June 2009, although some changes will be phased in.

Jonathan Bayly joins as COO and Company Secretary, having undertaken a number of interim management roles across different sectors, including manufacturing, IT, financial services, distribution and startups.

BIFM's longstanding Finance Director and Company Secretary Philip Margesson, who has been working on a consultancy basis since April 2008, will be standing down. Interim Chief Operating Officer Louise Douglas will also be ending her assignment with the Institute. The Board and Executive thanks them both for their significant contribution to the development of the BIFM.

The Bishop's Stortford head office will now be organised under four 'business units' - Member Services, Awarding Body, Business Development & Enterprise and Finance & Resources.

Selina Yankson will be Head of Member Services whilst Sarah Hunnable is on maternity leave. Selina has most recently been working on a contract basis as Membership Marketing Campaign Manager with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The new Head of Finance & Resources is Gareth Tancred. A qualified accountant, Gareth has filled senior management roles with a wireless communication systems provider and other technology companies. More recently he has worked as a finance director in online retailing and healthcare.

As previously announced, Linda Hausmanis is Awarding Body Manager, with Valerie Everitt as Head of the Awarding Body, alongside her continuing role as Professional Standards & Education Director.

BIFM's Knowledge Director Stephen Bennett takes on a new role as Strategy Director and Richard Byatt continues his work on corporate communications and wider engagement under the new title of Corporate & Public Affairs Director.

Commenting on the changes, BIFM CEO Ian Fielder said: "These changes give us a much simpler management structure, more closely aligned with our strategy and activities. The new appointments will bring new experience and thinking to the Institute, ensuring we can meet the challenges ahead. I am confident that BIFM will weather the economic storm and emerge stronger."
