Following its original negotiation work for a major new 16,600 m2 expansion of the current Cancer Research UK’s Clare Hall research campus in 2003, Phase 2 of the scheme has now been approved in detail by Hertsmere Borough Council.
Acting as town planning consultant, Sheppard Robson recently assisted the charity for the negotiations and submission of the planning application for the second phase of this complex Green Belt site expansion scheme. Careful landscaping, detailed ecology investigations and new access arrangements were all vital for this sensitive site approval. The architecture proposed follows the brick and pitched roof style of the original 1980s scheme at this visually important location.
Central to the Phase 2 expansion for the new 5,264 m2 building and its adjoining 220 space car park will be a comprehensive travel plan aimed at reducing carborne traffic for the future.
Cancer Research UK intends to press ahead with the state-of-the art laboratory design at this strategic location close to the M25, M1 and the A1M. Phases 3 and 4 have also received outline consent as master planned and negotiated by Sheppard Robson in 2003 and future expansion of the existing development will adhere to the carefully considered outline scheme approved by the planning authority at that time.
