Jeremy Dodge, business manager at Marshall Tufflex Energy Management, explains how a voltage optimisation system that, in a claimed industry first, uses “auto-transformers” to reduce incoming mains electricity voltage so that electrical equipment receives precisely the “outgoing feed” it needs to function optimally and no more,
thus significantly reducing wastage, can help major electricity users cut their bills “by as much as 25%”.
In 2006 one London hospital Trust launched an initiative to reduce its energy costs by £150,000 per annum simply by asking staff to be more energyefficient, by turning off lights, and shutting down electrical equipment where appropriate. This “good housekeeping” initiative proved wildly successful, with the first year savings target of £150,000 surpassed by almost £350,000, giving the Trust an extra £500,000 in its back pocket for virtually no financial outlay. It is a brilliant example of how “people power” can make a difference. Repeat the same exercise today, and a Trust’s drive to cut energy use could be even much more successful, and almost as easy – but how? The answer lies in voltage optimisation, a proven, straightforward, cost-effective, and results-driven technology that can potentially cut electricity bills by as much as 25%, and also safeguard/prolong the life of electrical equipment, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. The necessary components are easily retrofitted in a timescale to suit each installation. Take the London Trust mentioned above. In 2006 its annual energy bill was over £10 million. We will assume it only uses electricity, and be somewhat modest with our savings calculations, advising it that “intelligent voltage optimisation” can reduce its power bills by 17% (a figure we virtually guarantee). That is a saving of £1.7 million every year, and potentially more as power bills rise – for life. Broaden the equation to cover the entire NHS, with its annual energy bill of over £500 million, and the savings could be huge were a significant number of Trusts to sign up to voltage optimisation.
