Engineer turns teacher

The Institute is pleased to welcome as a new Member George McDonagh, who, having worked for two decades in hospital central sterile services departments as a maintenance engineer, later becoming a Test Person, is now passing on his knowledge as a lecturer (and validation engineer) at the University of Glasgow Dental School.

Currently lecturing to third, fourth, and fifth year dental students on all aspects of instrument decontamination, where he aims to help improve their knowledge and understanding of the importance of cleaning their instruments properly, he is also studying for a Masters in teaching. The new IHEEM Member, who believes he is the UK’s first full-time university lecturer in decontamination, has been teaching since October 2008, and says he enjoys it so much he wishes he had been able to fulfil the role “many years ago”.
