BAM’s ‘green’ credentials

Remote energy monitoring, providing an in-house energy management advice service to sites, reducing generator use, and improving the efficiency of its fleet, are among measures construction company BAM Construct UK says culminated in it reducing its carbon footprint by 11% in 2009 compared with 2008.

BAM says the biggest contributor has been “using a lot less fuel and electricity for construction sites despite increasing construction turnover”. In January, the company signed up to the 10:10 UK carbon reduction commitment initiative. Its work on the Co-operative Group’s new Manchester headquarters aims to achieve a BREEAM “outstanding” ranking – currently only achieved by one UK structure to date
