Hard evidence backs Trend carbon reduction claims

According to Trend Control Systems, up to 84% of a building’s energy consumption could be under the control of a building energy management system (BEMS), but, as the company puts it: “How many users are actually properly in control of such equipment?”

At Healthcare Estates this year, Trend showed visitors how it is possible to significantly reduce the energy consumed within their building, “simply by making their BEMS work harder”. In a conference seminar entitled “How the NHS can better exploit an energy saving asset”, it explained the role of a BEMS in relation to energy management, and how it can assist building owners and managers in reducing their buildings’ energy consumption and carbon footprint.

In a case study discussed during the seminar, involving London’s Charing Cross Hospital, Trend demonstrated that the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust had achieved significant annual gas and electricity savings – of five million kWh and two million kWh respectively over a 12-month period – by implementing various energy-saving initiatives.

The company said: “The hospital accomplished the savings mainly via three strands of action, each providing a rapid payback: improved monitoring and optimisation of heating and ventilation using its Trend Control Systems building management system (BMS); installation of variable speed drives (VSDs) with high efficiency motors on 70 air circulation fans, and various steps to reduce the electricity used by lighting.”
