Lift buttons show high bacteria levels

Bacteria levels on lift buttons are three times higher than on public toilet seats, University of Arizona research for antibacterial product protection supplier Microban has shown.

Samples taken in a variety of extensively publicly used environments showed that the level of bacteria on lift buttons averaged 2,200 colony forming units per cm2, compared with 8 cfu on “the average” public toilet seat. Among the common bacteria likely to be found, Microban says, are E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and MRSA.
