Bristol Maid says its new “eClean” healthcare furniture range “sets the standard in functionality and ease of cleaning”, with the Chesterfield Royal Hospital having already equipped wards with the new eClean bedside cabinet, and clinical trials ongoing at the seven UK “showcase hospitals” (HEJ – June 2009) as part of the Department of Health’s HCAI Technology Innovation Programme launched in 2008.
The first product, the eClean bedside cabinet, was developed as part of the DH, NHS PASA, and Design Councilcommissioned “Design Bugs Out” initiative. It features a “unique” one-piece continuously moulded design where all surfaces are accessible for easy cleaning. Three removable, reversible drawers will fit on either side of the cabinet, enabling use either side of the bed, while keyless RFID-controlled electronic locks enable safe storage of patients’ possessions or use in “medicine management programmes”. Diane Simpson, senior matron, infection prevention and control, Chesterfield Royal Hospital, said. “Because the unit has no back, and we can take out the drawers completely, it can be wiped clean in minutes and ready to receive the next patient. The bedside cabinet is shortly to be joined by a “co-ordinating overbed table”.
