CO2-cutting system scoops award

A “green power generation” initiative at Solihull Hospital that will reportedly cut carbon dioxide emissions by 45% has won recognition. The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and technology partner ENER-G received the Combined Heat and Power Association’s (CHPA) Public Sector Award for their trigeneration scheme.

The £5.7 million ENER-G system creates low carbon electricity, steam or hot water for winter heating, and chilled water for air conditioning system use in summer. ENER-G says it will generate annual cost savings of £293,000, without capital investment, and cut annual CO2 emissions by 1,920 tonnes. The natural gas-powered MTU CHP unit, providing 770 kWe, was commissioned last summer as part of “a strategic refurbishment” of the hospital’s electricity, and heating and cooling infrastructure to cut energy costs while increasing interior comfort.
