Electrical issues to the fore

Earthing, supply impedence, adjacent voltages, resilience and circuit relationships are some of the key electrical safety topics addressed by MEIGan, a medical equipment installation guidance document issued by MHRA.

It particularly refers to imaging equipment and pre-installation electrical requirements, and it focuses on design relationships and the specific issue of safety relative to associated lighting and power circuits.

Earthing and safety in a clinical environment are addressed with reference to the IEE Wiring Regulations Guidance Note 7, Medical Locations. Resilience of supply for associated medical devices is considered with reference to essential supplies and the appropriate use of Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS).

The imaging installation can bring together a complex relationship between main distribution and final sub-circuits that must be addressed to ensure a safe patient environment.

IHEEM has been running a series of seminars to introduce the new guidance, discuss practical issues concerned with installation validation and testing and consider the relationship to associated circuits within the patient environment.

Birmingham seminar
The last seminar in the series will take place on 9 March at the Great Barr Hotel, Birmingham. To book a place, visit www.iheem.org.uk or telephone Louise Hammond, IHEEM events manager on 023 9282 3186. It will be presented by Brian Mansfield, MHRA (the lead author of MEIGan document), Chris Holme, Estates and Facilities, DH (lead author of the Annex re GN7), and John Murray, Bender UK (supplier and installer of UPS and IPS equipment).
