Microfibre barrier laundry adds value

London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has installed a complete barrier laundry system from Electrolux Professional at its St Thomas’ Hospital location for specialist washing of an estimated 7,000 microfibre cloths and 5,000 microfibre mops each day from both the St Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospital sites.

Since the installation, as Electrolux Professional national account manager Kurt Fryer reports, the “cost-effective” equipment’s high performance has seen laundry staff achieve a significant increase in productivity.

Continually driving down infection and prioritising hygiene is the primary concern at the Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London, where Electrolux Professional recently installed a complete microfibre barrier laundry. To further enhance cleanliness and hygiene throughout these two famous London teaching hospitals, in March 2009 the Trust awarded a contract to C+K Group for the provision of a “total microfibre cleaning system”, comprising JonMaster Ultra Microfibre cloths and mops from Johnson Diversey, and Vikan microfibre cloths and mop handles (JonMaster microfibre mop heads are attached to the latter) for the cleaning of wards, clinics, and all public areas. C+K Group also supplied a specially-designed cleaning trolley which is now in use at both sites (see panel). The challenge for us at Electrolux Professional Laundry was to ensure that the significant investment in ultra microfibre, and the delicate fibres upon which the whole system is based, are protected. The ability to remove harmful organisms and spores from hospital surfaces using ultra microfibre tools without needing to use harmful chemicals is proven. However, if laundered incorrectly, the tiny delicate fibres could be irretrievably damaged, and the capillary action destroyed.
