Penlon sells medical gas business to Atlas Copco

Atlas Copco, which already has a major UK presence in the field through Derbyshire-based BeaconMedaes, has agreed to acquire the Medical Gas Solutions business of Abingdonheadquartered Penlon – which supplies medical gas systems, medical vacuum equipment, and pipeline components to hospitals – subject to competition authority clearance.

The purchase price was not disclosed. Penlon Medical Gas Solutions’ business, which had 2010 revenues of around £12 million, and employs around 100 in Abingdon and Manchester, has assembly facilities in the UK, and sells via distributors to over 30 countries. Penlon was founded in 1943 as the Longworth Scientific Instrument Company by personnel from the Department of Anaesthetics at Oxford University. Anaesthesia equipment supply (the Anaesthesia business is unaffected by the sale) remains a key activity today. Atlas Copco says the acquisition will help it become “a comprehensive solutions provider to worldwide medical gas customers”. The business will become part of Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s Industrial Air division, with products sold under the brand name Penlon Medical Gas Solutions.
