First BREEAM ‘Excellent’ for Wales

A healthcare centre under development as part of the £13 million regeneration of Loudoun Square in Butetown, Cardiff, is Wales’ first healthcare project to attain a BREEAM “Excellent” rating.

Being built by the Leadbitter Group, the centre was Wales’ highest-scoring building under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) for the 12 months prior to the end of May 2011. The judges praised the project team for making sustainability “a key priority in both the design and build”. Features include a biomass boiler for heat and power, water harvesting, a water leak detection system, and “water-efficient” sanitaryware. On its completion in early 2013 the overall development will incorporate the healthcare centre, 62 affordable homes, a community hub, and new retail units. The project is a collaboration between Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA), Cardiff Council, and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, with design by the Wales studio of architects Austin-Smith:Lord.
