Power and automation technology specialist, ABB, has welcomed the EU’s introduction of minimum efficiency levels for LV motors, saying the new requirements are “in line with its focus” on providing customers with high efficiency motors both for the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) market in the US, and the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) market worldwide.
The company said: “Industry accounts for about 42 per cent of global electricity consumption, and about two-thirds of that is used to power electric motors, so any regulation to improve motors’ energy efficiency will have a significant impact on energy usage, and help reduce carbon emissions.” The requirements, in the form of Commission Regulation EC 640/2009, came into effect on 16 June this year.
