A £100 million specialist cancer centre development designed by Arup and Hopkins Architects will open next April in central London, offering patients, their families, and carers, a range of holistic, patient-focused therapeutic and specialist services.
Designed to make maximum use of natural light, the new University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre incorporates several best practice model guidelines taken from around the world. Construction began, in phases, from 2008. The 15,000 m2 centre has been specially adapted for rapid decontamination, and will also offer outpatient consultation, treatment facilities, respite support areas, and daytime accommodation for patients. An aseptic suite, imaging, consulting, and facilities for phlebotomy, will be provided at the nearby University College Hospital. Arup associate director, Mike Booth, said: “The Cancer Centre will offer patients excellent support facilities and surroundings while they undertake treatment. One of the key priorities was to provide a cost-effective facility that could also easily achieve an excellent BREEAM rating.” The overall structure and design was supported throughout with CAD modelling. Arup’s full scope of works has included structural, mechanical, electrical, public health, acoustics, fire engineering, transportation, sustainability, and specialist lighting. The practice has also provided advice around transport facilities – from ambulance drop-off points to cycling and disabled car parking arrangements.
