MS facility will add crucial capacity

With around a half of all construction projects over budget or missing their completion date, (according to Construction Statistics Annual, 2009, Office of Public Sector Information), David Jupp, business development manager at Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions, looks at why an off-site solution was chosen for the new West of England Multiple Sclerosis Centre in Bradley Stoke, North Bristol. A

decision he says was largely driven by offsite’s key advantages of enhanced design flexibility, factoryassured quality, faster completion, and less disruption and waste on site.

Creating modern, efficient healthcare facilities requires the use of tried and trusted construction solutions as clients look to bring facilities on stream sooner, and demonstrate better value for money. The new West of England Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Centre in Bradley Stoke, North Bristol, commissioned by Moonstone Therapy Centre, is no different in this respect, which is one of the reasons why an off-site construction system was chosen. Off-site is now used throughout all sectors as clients realise it delivers more predictable project outcomes. It is hardly surprising that more are taking this route when you consider that the Construction Statistics Annual, Office of Public Sector Information, reported that only 46 per cent of construction projects were completed on cost, and only 59 per cent on time. Faced with this kind of uncertainty, the benefits of creating large elements of a building off-site are clear. As well as being faster – progress is rarely affected by factors such as inclement weather and lack of available skilled tradespeople as can happen with conventional builds – off-site can also reduce the carbon footprint of a development by minimising waste, and journeys to and from site. In addition, clients have been quick to grasp the benefits of large elements of their building being manufactured in an assessed factory, which means more consistent quality.
