According to AECOM, the provider of professional technical and management support services, there is now a growing desire among developers and regulators to see CEEQUAL, an environmental assessment methodology historically applied to civil engineering projects such as roads, bridges, and water treatment works, applied to all civil engineering projects, to improve and measure sustainability.
As HEJ editor, Jonathan Baillie reports, AECOM believes the developing measuring tool will increasingly be viewed as complementary to the now well-established sustainability-driven methodology of BREEAM.
CEEQUAL – the Assessment and Awards Scheme for Improving Sustainability in Civil Engineering and the Public Realm – is now available in three forms: for UK projects; projects outside the UK; and for term contracts, over a time period and geographical area both for maintenance or multiple, small, new or refurbishment projects gathered together under one contract. Since its inception in the early 1990s, BREEAM (the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) has grown, both in scope and geographically, to become the most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings throughout the world. Now, according to AECOM, “it is time for CEEQUAL to make its mark with the potential to improve sustainability in civil engineering and public realm projects in Britain and beyond”. The company adds: “CEEQUAL aims to deliver improved project and contract specification, design, and construction, and to demonstrate the commitment of the civil engineering industry to environmental quality and social performance. “While BREEAM relates to the building design and elements of function,” the company continues, “CEEQUAL is used to enhance and sustain the world’s built and natural environment – that is to say, the external environment of a project. It provides an independent measure of project and contract performance on a wide range of environmental and social issues considered in the design, construction, and/or operational phases of a project.”
