ADT protects £300 m Scottish hospital

ADT Fire and Security has provided a sophisticated fire detection system to the new £300 million Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Stirlingshire, Scotland’s largest NHS construction ever built, with 4,000 rooms, 25 wards, and 860 beds.

The company worked with building services provider, Crown House Technologies, to design, plan, and install the system, fitting 28 MX2-211 fire panels, 5,300 smoke detectors, 112 loops, 5 MX graph systems, and four FM200 extinguishing systems. Additionally, over 2,500 smoke fire dampers, which will automatically close should a fire occur, were installed. ADT Fire and Security said: “These vents are usually above ceilings, which makes manually opening them difficult and time-consuming with such a large site. We therefore designed an electronic control module to monitor the dampers on site, so that, should a fire be detected, they close automatically.” Also being utilised is the new digital Minerva MX2, a digital addressable fire alarm controller that uses ‘state-of-theart’, multi-sensor virtual detection to ‘expertly isolate fire using electronic fire doors and protects pre-determined escape routes’. Forth Valley is the UK’s first hospital to use robots to transport goods and equipment around the building. Should a fire occur, the robots will be prevented from entering a danger zone via a signal sent directly from the fire detection panels.
