A new energy centre which will reportedly cut carbon emissions ‘by almost half’ is to be developed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. MITIE has been awarded preferred bidder status to develop and operate the centre over a 25-year period; it will be developed in partnership with the NHS Carbon and Energy Fund.
The facility will provide low carbon heating, hot water, and electricity, for the Addenbrooke’s and Rosie hospitals, saving Cambridge University Hospitals almost 30,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, and thus ‘helping the Trust to surpass its sustainability targets’, with an anticipated 47% cut in carbon emissions over the contract term. Grid electricity and gas consumption will be ‘cut by more than 50%’, providing the Trust with ‘greater energy independence’, and ‘protecting it against rising energy prices’.
