50,000 patients treated in mobile units

Mary Hyland from Eaton Wick, near Windsor, has become the 50,000th NHS patient to have a procedure performed in a mobile operating theatre unit.

Her knee replacement operation took place in a laminar-flow mobile unit stationed outside the day surgery unit at Heatherwood Hospital, near Ascot. A UK national fleet of 24 mobile theatres is operated by independent healthcare company Vanguard Healthcare.

Vanguard managing director Graeme McConnell and sales and marketing director Mary Smallbone presented Mary Hyland with an engraved antique silver rosebowl and a bouquet of flowers to mark the landmark occasion at a ceremony at the hospital attended by Evelyn Barker, director of clinical services at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Trust.

“We are extremely proud of our team and of our partnership with the NHS which has produced 50,000 additional procedures by making best use of the estate,” said Graeme McConnell. “This is a significant reduction to waiting lists and it has been achieved on around 60 NHS sites nationwide from Aberdeen to Chelsea and Bury St. Edmunds to Swansea.”
