After reviewing its annual Awards last year, IHEEM has introduced two new awards for 2013 – for Sustainability and Marketing – both to be sponsored.
All but two of the 2013 Awards (which will be given to the recipients at the Institute’s 70th Anniversary Lunch at the House of Lords in November) will be presented at the Annual Awards Dinner on 8 October at Manchester’s Midland Hotel (pictured) during Healthcare Estates 2013.
Exciting new initiatives
“Having last been re-assessed in 2010, 2013 sees some exciting initiatives introduced to the Awards programme,” confirms IHEEM recruitment and membership manager, Chris Parker. “Significantly, the Institute is pleased to introduce two new awards, recognising significant contributions to the sustainability agenda and successful marketing campaigns, as well as seeking nominations for the Best Innovative Product or Service of the Year award launched in 2012. A number of the awards will be sponsored this year, the involvement of commercial companies recognising the value such partners bring to the Institute, its members, and the sector in general.” All but two of the Awards will be presented at the Annual Awards Dinner, on the evening of the first day of Healthcare Estates 2013, 8 October, in Manchester, with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the William E Schall Award, presented at the Institute’s 70th Anniversary lunch in November at the House of Lords, before an audience of Company Affiliate members and their guests.
President’s message
Greg Markham, IHEEM President, says: “I encourage all IHEEM members to ensure that their fellow members who may merit recognition be nominated, or encouraged to apply, for the IHEEM awards. Please also recognise the involvement of your service providers and business partners.” Details of the Awards, and how to make a nomination, follow.
The IHEEM Lifetime Achievement Award
goes to an Institute member who has given long service to the healthcare sector within the NHS or the private sector, and made a significant contribution to their particular field. Open to members, although in exceptional circumstances, made to a non-member, the Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated ‘an exceptional contribution to the field of engineering and healthcare estates’, and may be given posthumously.
The John Bolton Memorial Award for Excellence in the Field of Education, Training and Development
is made to a facilities directorate, NHS Trust, or health service provider to the NHS, who has contributed to the development, training, and career progression, of their staff, and delivered service improvements in estates and facilities. The Award commemorates the life of John Bolton, the Institute’s President from 1985 to 1986, who spent most of his career in the NHS. A regular attendee at the annual conferences, and a guest speaker at the Annual Dinner, he encouraged the involvement of his technical expert colleagues at the Institute’s one-day seminars, and often participated himself. He was made a Companion of the most Honourable Order of the Bath in the 1985 New Year’s Honours List.
The William E Schall Award for Excellence in Medical Technologies,
established by the Society of X Ray Technology. which merged with IHEEM in 1990, commemorates the life of William Ernest Schall, the first president of the Society in 1954, who remained an active member until his death in 1965, and was one of the oldest members of the British X-ray industry. It is presented to the graduate who has made the best contribution while studying the Medical Technologies Foundation Degree Course, and goes to the second-year student who has performed best academically, and contributed through interaction with fellow students and tutors.
The Lucas Scholarship Award for Significant Contribution to Branch Activities
was created in the mid-1980s in recognition of Bernard Lucas’s efforts for the Institute, and to encourage up to two young members to participate in events such as the Annual Conference at no personal cost. Dr. B.G.B Lucas was President of The Institute of Hospital Engineering from 1973 to 1975. As an apprentice, he helped build the Schneider Trophy Seaplane S6B. Having later studied to become a doctor, on qualifying he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve, and worked on high altitude research projects. After demobilisation he worked at a variety of hospitals. Nominations for the Award will be accepted from Branch officers for new members seen to have taken an active interest in the Institute, or established members who have played a significant part in its activities at branch or national level. The Award will be made to two members to attend the annual conference at the Institute’s expense.
The Northcroft Silver Medal for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Hospital Engineering
is given in memory of Lionel G Northcroft, who joined Spirax Manufacturing Company as sales manager in 1932, subsequently becoming MD, and then chairman, of Spirax Sarco Engineering. Well-known and respected in the steamusing field as a lecturer and writer on technical processes and equipment, and appointed OBE in 1949 for his work on fuel efficiency during the war, he was President of The Institute of Hospital Engineering from 1967 to 1969. Established by Lord Northcroft’s own generosity, the Northcroft Medal goes annually to the author (both members and non-members are eligible) of the technical paper published in HEJ considered to have contributed most to the advancement of hospital engineering. The article or paper should not have appeared in any other publication, but may have been given at a branch meeting, or an Annual Conference, of IHEEM. The assessment is made by the Institute’s Professional Development Committee.
The Best Innovative Product or Service of the Year Award
seeks to highlight organisations that have identified new products or services, and successfully brought them to market, or adapted an existing product for a new market. Entrants must be able to clearly demonstrate a demand for the innovation, and that it has proved successful in line with the objectives set. This award will be judged by an independent panel.
One of two new Awards this year, the Sustainability Award will recognise Trusts and healthcare facilities, who, working with key organisations or manufacturers, have introduced energy efficiency measures during the past year. Each entry will be judged by an independent panel against the following criteria:
• Money saved.
• Reduction in carbon footprint.
• Reduction in energy consumption.
• Degree of collaboration with supplier.
For 2013 this award is generously supported by B&ES (the Building & Engineering Services Association).
The aim of the new Marketing Award (sponsor to be confirmed), is ‘to recognise the best advertising and marketing communications across a range of trade media, in arguably one of the most challenging of industry sectors’. The judges will be looking primarily for creativity, clarity, impact, and effectiveness. Entries are sought from companies marketing themselves to the healthcare sector via advertising in publications, exhibiting, direct mail, email blasts, etc. Entries will be judged against the following criteria:
• The soundness of the campaign’s objectives, and how it fits with overall brand strategy.
• Campaign execution and creativity.
• Evidence of its success.
Entrants must submit a maximum 500- word nomination explaining why they should win, together with examples of their marketing material. Nominations for all awards should be made using the online nomination form at www.iheem.org.uk/2013-Award- Nomination-Form.
