Brandon Medical, the innovator and manufacturer of surgical lighting technology, has appointed Professor Jonathan Sackier (pictured), ‘one of the pioneers of the laparoscopic surgery revolution’, as the company’s clinical director.
Professor Sackier (MB ChB, FRCS, FACS), who has collaborated with the medical technology sector for many years, studied medicine at the University of Liverpool, trained in the UK as a surgeon, and was recruited to the US in 1989. In August 1993 he performed the world’s first laparoscopic cholecystectomy at San Diego’s Thornton Hospital using AESOP, ‘the market’s first robotic assistant’. A Professor of Surgery at George Washington University, in Washington, he founded, and funded, the Washington Institute of Surgical Endoscopy, and is a Visiting Professor of Surgery & Medicine at the University of Virginia. Brandon added: “Actively involved with worldwide research into the use of robotic enhancement technology, his work has led to the clinical introduction of a range of robotic interfaces in use worldwide. He is also interested in research into the science of minimally invasive surgery and consequent pathophysiological effects.” Graeme and Adrian Hall, managing directors at Brandon Medical, said: “We are delighted to welcome Jonathan as the first consultant surgeon on our Board.
