Royal London ‘in safe hands’

Fire Detectors’ Discovery fire products are providing life and property protection at the ‘new’ Royal London Hospital. The main contractor on the £1.1 billion PFI project, Skanska, selected Static Systems Group to design, supply, and install, the hospital’s highly complex fire system.

It recommended Apollo as the best solutions provider, and a Skanska team visited Apollo’s Hampshire headquarters to assess its products and services. Malcolm Snarey, senior project manager at Skanska, explains: “Apollo showed us its test facilities, and explained its rigorous testing procedures and standards, which gave us reassurance. We also required an open protocol solution to safeguard against potential issues in the future. “We had to demonstrate that the selected system would meet British Standards (BS5839-1:2002), HTM 82 requirements, and those of the local district surveyor. The Static Systems/Apollo solution met all these requirements.” In all, over 10,000 Discovery units have been installed, including around 5,000 multisensor detectors, 150 heat detectors, and 1,500 manual call points. The fire system comprises 37 main fire alarm panels with over 180 loops, 17 repeater panels, and two Master Inter-ringing Units (MIUs), monitored and managed by two central indicating equipment PCs, one in the Fire Command Centre, and the other in the ‘24/7’ building management office. The system monitors over 500 zones.
