Which will see NHS Trusts across England stage a variety of events on 27 March to show their support for a more sustainable approach to healthcare provision – looks back at a series of successful roadshows and other activities held over the past six months in the run-up to this year’s big day, and describes some of the highlights set to take place on the day itself.

This month marks the third annual NHS Sustainability Day, on 27 March 2014. The event is supported by IHEEM, and Health Estate Journal is the official Media Partner. Throughout the past three years the campaign has managed to raise the debate on sustainable practices within healthcare to a new height. Supported by the NHS Sustainable Development Unit, Barts Health NHS Trust has established NHS Sustainability Day across its six London hospitals in what has now become an important date in any healthcare professional’s diary. Over the years NHS Sustainability Day has enthused and motivated hundreds of NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers to examine their sustainable practices. Such has been the impact of the day that, in 2013 alone, over 100 NHS Trusts took part in activities, events, and workshops throughout the country.

As the years have passed, participation levels have increased. This has been well demonstrated by the NHS Sustainability Day Roadshows which have taken place throughout 2013/14. The Roadshow concept was created to support Trusts who, throughout the past three years, have continually demonstrated the ability to lead on the sustainable agenda in healthcare within their region.
