Joint ‘vision’ for a sustainable future

‘A vision showing how key organisations in the health and care system will join forces to address sustainability challenges, potentially saving millions of pounds’ is how NHS England and Public Health England describe the new Sustainability Strategy for the NHS, Public Health and Social Care System for 2014-2020.

The Strategy, and five accompanying ‘modules’ focused on priority areas for action, were officially unveiled to an audience of over 300 people drawn from across the healthcare, public health, local authority, private, and not-for-profit sectors, at Westminster Central Hall in London. Entitled Sustainable, Resilient, Healthy People & Places – A Sustainable Development Strategy for the NHS, Public Health and Social Care system, the new Strategy was produced by the Sustainability Development Unit (formerly the NHS Sustainable Development Unit) following a wide-ranging consultation exercise undertaken last year that drew nearly 1,000 responses. Respondents included 55 per cent of all English NHS Trusts, a third of the new Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), and a similar number of English local authorities. The broad spectrum of other organisations that offered views and input ranged from the Royal Colleges of Nursing and General Practitioners to WRAP – an organisation which ‘helps people recycle more and waste less’.

The introduction to the main Strategy document, which was published on 29 January 2013 alongside the five accompanying ‘modules’, explains that, ‘as current discussions, including the NHS Call to Action,1 explore how to achieve the best possible health and care outcomes within the financial resources available’, the following elements will need to be factored in:
