Sixteen months ago, according to Trumpf Medical Systems, which managed the project, ‘something out of the ordinary’ happened at Leighton Hospital in Crewe. When making plans to upgrade ageing operating theatres and critical care units, the estates department took the decision to involve other disciplines from the very start of the process.
Clinicians, nursing staff, architects, patient representatives, and suppliers, all played their part, with the estates team always at the hub. As Oliver Law, managing director of the UK medical technology specialist, explains, this multidisciplinary approach had a profound effect on the outcome.
The project was challenging, and on several occasions the estates team changed plans based on the views of other stakeholders. The outcome, however, is a brand new complex that far exceeds the expected norm at a district general hospital. The new suite of operating theatres and critical care facilities is truly fit-for-purpose, now, and into the future. The subtle and innovative features are many, testimony to the fact that all parties have gone that extra mile to ensure the best possible patient experience and outcome, and that every facility is provided to complement staff skill and dedication.
