Bolstering infection control using copper

Copper and copper alloy (‘Antimicrobial Copper’) touch surfaces reportedly ‘offer a cost-effective engineering approach to improving environmental hygiene and bolstering infection control’.

EPIC 3 guidelines recognise that high- touch surfaces made of Antimicrobial Copper harbour 80-90% fewer bacteria than equivalent, non-copper surfaces.

Trade association experts will be available on the Antimicrobial Copper stand to offer impartial information and advice on specifying and procuring products as part of a refurbishment or new-build. Commercial partners Allgood, BA Systems, and Pegler Yorkshire, will also be on hand to discuss their Antimicrobial Copper hardware, sanitary fittings, and medical equipment product ranges.

The Copper Development Association said: “Improved patient outcomes have been demonstrated in ICUs, with a >50% reduction in HCAIs achieved by replacing just six surfaces with Antimicrobial Copper. This antimicrobial efficacy lasts the lifetime of the product, unlike coatings. Products are available in a range of colours, are durable, and require no special cleaning.”
