Mile End Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust, is the UK’s first hospital to use Cheetah, a demand- controlled ventilation system from energy management specialist, Quintex, in its kitchen.
Cheetah is now installed in the hospital’s main kitchen, and, Quintex says, will save Mile End 49,794 kWh and 13.3 tonnes of CO2 a year, achieving payback in just under two years, and ‘projected annual financial saving of several thousand pounds’.
Cheetah uses sensor technology to detect cooking activity levels and reduce ventilation fan speeds so that extract rates are matched to cooking demands. While this is the first hospital installation, the technology is already being used by such leading companies as Tesco, Ikea, JD Wetherspoons, Whitbread, and Center Parcs.
