Cynon Valley project moves ahead

A £30 million neighbourhood hospital in Cynon Valley, Wales, has been granted outline planning consent. The scheme, which has been designed by HLM Architects for the North Glamorgan NHS Trust, will provide primary care support for the residents of Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The 13,000 sq m, two-storey hospital will be located on a site of approximately 5.52 hectares (13.6 acres) adjacent to the Afon Cynon. It will provide 128 beds for rehabilitation and intermediate care.

In addition, there will be women and children’s services, a large supporting therapy function, a range of outpatient clinics, as well as a mental health unit for outpatient care and elderly inpatient care.

Energy efficiency is central to the design of the new hospital. Natural ventilation, maximising daylight and passive climate control should lower energy consumption, reducing the carbon footprint, as well as operating costs.
