If the healthcare sector was invited to the clinic for an annual check-up, it would undoubtedly be advised to reduce its monthly consumption of energy. By cutting its intake, the industry could shed more than a few pounds, and emerge in better shape financially, as well as improving its environmental performance – as required by the increasing implementation of sustainable procurement criteria.

Many industries will be familiar with this advice, but the health sector, with the huge number of properties it operates – including many ageing buildings – is a textbook case. According to one industry estimate, hospitals typically consume twice the energy per square metre of an average commercial office building.
