Addressing Ghana’s rising healthcare demand

A UK architectural practice, an infrastructure and project management specialist, and a consortium of UK suppliers, are working together to deliver new hospitals in Ghana.

tp bennett (TPB) is working with NMS Infrastructure (NMSI) and a consortium of UK-based suppliers to deliver six new district hospitals and upgrade a seventh for Ghana’s Ministry of Health (MoH). As Polly Barker, a project director at the architectural, interiors, and town planning practice reports, the new district hospitals have established a new blueprint for a network of health provision which the MoH is creating across Ghana.

The MoH is radically changing healthcare across Ghana. The first cog in the machine of Ghana’s new healthcare network is the District Hospitals – regional centres from which smaller, local units will radiate. NMSI saw that it had the project management skills and experience to help MoH drive the project forward, and to deliver the infrastructure on the ground.

The recent economic growth in Ghana, combined with population growth and the introduction of a National Health Insurance Scheme, have brought about this rapid development of a holistic and comprehensive public health provision, driven by a forward-looking public healthcare strategy. This has enabled the NMSI team and the MoH to work collaboratively to build a modern healthcare system and infrastructure that is both ‘cutting edge’ and bespoke to the needs of the Ghanaian people.
