Sir Alex officially opens bronchoscopy unit

University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust’s (UHSM) new state-of-the- art Bronchoscopy Unit was recently officially opened by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The £1m Unit has welcomed patients since last July; its opening has trebled the number of patients that can be treated at UHSM with endobronchial techniques. The new facility was developed through a partnership between UHSM and The Medicines Evaluation Unit, with MHA Architects responsible for its design – ‘from inception to completion’. Thought to be the country’s largest centre of its kind, it provides four consulting rooms, three procedure rooms, an eight-bed recovery ward for outpatient and day patient use, and ancillary accommodation. It adjoins the existing UHSM North West Lung Centre, whose work and research it will complement.

MHA director, Jimmy Lennon said: “We are delighted to have been able to assist UHSM and the MEU in bringing this project to completion, and were pleased to receive extremely positive feedback from both the Trust and the users at the opening ceremony. We have seen first-hand the difference this Unit is making to people’s lives, and are proud to have contributed to it.”
