Endoscopic facilities offer ‘future-proofing’

Karl Storz has installed three integrated OR1 operating theatres in the ‘new and improved’ £30 m Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital.

Built on the site of the old building, the new hospital will continue to provide a full range of medical and surgical specialities, delivered in modern clinical facilities.

Karl Storz said: “The new theatres provide the latest innovations and services for endoscopic surgery, and are multi-functional and multidiscipline, making them suitable for use in all surgical specialities.” One of the theatres incorporates Karl Storz’s communications package, affording full videoconferencing facilities for streaming of live surgery; ‘quad-video’ to enable the streaming of four separate images simultaneously; and telestration, a graphical teaching aid.

OR1 enables theatres to be preset to individual surgeons’ needs via the easyto-use Realistic User Interface (RUI). The clinical team can control and monitor all devices from one location using exact device replication.

Adrian Manning, deputy theatre manager at the Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, said: “The new theatres not only look great, but have also provided us with the flexibility and future-proofing required for today’s modern operating theatre. I feel we have only just scratched the surface with the potential of this system – the surgeons are already thinking of ways they can use the viewing and recording facilities to aid with teaching.”
