How an off-site construction system enabled the completion of a specialist eye clinic at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield in just 32 weeks.
Jon Newman, managing director of Elliott, explains how an off-site construction system enabled the completion of a specialist eye clinic at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield in just 32 weeks.
Pinderfields Hospital, part of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, is now home to a centre of excellence for specialist eye services following completion of a new two-storey, £5 m clinic. The newly completed Pinderfields Eye Centre building houses the eye clinic and offices which were previously in the main hospital building. Completion of the separate eye clinic has freed up space in the main hospital for 88 extra beds, which will help accommodate additional urgent and emergency care requirements that are being centralised at Pinderfields.
The purpose-built ophthalmology centre, which opened in September, now provides state-of-the-art equipment for treating patients with macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other eye conditions. In completing this project on time and within budget utilising an innovative off-site system, the clinic has set the benchmark for the future delivery of healthcare facilities. As with all projects that the company is involved in, the Elliott team worked with the architects and the hospital to ensure that patients and staff were involved in the design of the building.
