Rooflight brightens hospital clinic

The new Rapid Access Clinic at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough has been brightened by the fitting of a large Ritchlight TL24 hip ended lantern rooflight that gives controllable ventilation with good levels of daylight.

Manufactured and installed by Brett Martin Daylight Systems, the 8.6 x 2.6 metres wide, 11 bay rooflight was designed for South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust by P+HS Architects. The Rapid Access Clinic was built by R.B.A. Moody Bros (Contractors) Ltd. The Ritchlight rooflight is doubleglazed throughout in grey tint “Antisun” glass to prevent glare while at the same time saving energy by reducing the need for artificial lighting and providing passive solar gain.

The vertically-glazed perimeter skirt that produces the lantern effect also raises the overall height of the rooflight by 0.5 metres, creating a greater feeling of spaciousness for staff and patients inside the clinic. The rooflight’s thermally broken frame was manufactured using extruded aluminium sections that are dual coloured - polyester powder coated light grey (RAL 7035) on the inside and metallic grey (RAL 9007) on the outside.

Brett Martin Daylight Systems’ architectural rooflights are available in pyramid, barrel vault and gable ended styles as well as the hip ended lantern type. The aluminium frames can be coated to any RAL colour. Glazing options include a variety of structured polycarbonate (clear/tinted) as well as double glazed glass with toughened outer and laminated inner as installed at the Rapid Access Clinic.
