Patients in the West Midlands are to benefit from closer-to-home healthcare through the largest fleet of mobile medical units ever assembled in the UK.
Nine mobile units, including operating theatres, endoscopy units, recovery wards and outpatient units will be used by Nuffield Hospitals to fulfil the contract and will be deployed on easily-accessible sites in the community such as supermarket car parks and premises of leisure facilities.
Nuffield Hospitals is able to provide this mobile service following recent advances in day surgery techniques and the innovative construction of its Vanguard Healthcare mobile units.
The national fleet has already been used by the NHS to carry out more than 60,000 safe and successful procedures. The units will treat patients within the boundary of the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority (SHA).
As part of the contract, healthcare services will also be delivered in Nuffield Hospitals’ acute hospital facilities in Warwickshire and Hereford.
Under the contract, Nuffield Hospitals will carry out 24,000 additional outpatient appointments a year for the next five years, with 10,000 a year of these likely to result in day case procedures.
Nuffield Hospital’s medical and clinical staff will have the capacity to undertake most forms of general surgery and clinical specialty.
The most common forms of treatment are likely to be those involving urology, cataracts, endoscopy and orthopaedic surgery.
