Energy-saving UCV canopy for Spire Edinburgh

As part of an ongoing relationship with Spire Healthcare, Medical Air Technology (MAT) has recently refurbished and upgraded an existing operating theatre at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital in Edinburgh.

The theatre now has an ECO-flow ultraclean ventilation (UCV) canopy, bringing to three the number of ultraclean theatres at the hospital. While the theatre was upgraded, the ventilation plant was also replaced to full HTM 03-01 standards. The teams at MAT, ventilation contractor, CFES, and Spire Murrayfield, worked closely together to navigate the challenges posed by working in a theatre right at the end of a clean corridor – where minimising building disturbance was essential – and consequently achieved a smooth,  speedy works programme.

MAT said: “The ECO-flow canopy combines energy efficiency with performance, via innovative internal design, and infinitely variable speed DC motors, while highly efficient centrifugal fans reduce the energy drain required for cooling.” LED cruciform lighting has also been added to the canopy. MAT says the system ‘uses up to 60% less power than other similar canopies, even in full ultraclean mode’.

As part of a ‘total turnkey installation’, MAT also supplied medical gas pendants, the IPS system, and a touchscreen surgeons’ control panel, plus all associated services,

Under the ECO-flow, over 500 air changes / hour at the operating site ensure less than 10 cfus/m2 within the clean zone, ‘guaranteeing to minimise surgical site infection’.
