Solar and wind powered hospital in a box

A fully portable surgical operating theatre powered by solar, pedal, or wind energy has been developed by a team of medical professionals in Kent that will offer life-saving surgical treatment to people living in some of the most remote and hostile parts of the world.

The CompactOR or the Compact Operating Room, has been designed to fit into the back of a 4x4 vehicle or to be easily airlifted into disaster areas to make available basic hospital treatments to those otherwise unable reach medical facilities.

CompactOR, developed by Global Medical Systems and unveiled at the International Aid and Trade show in Geneva recently, comprises two fully portable boxes that unfold to provide lighting, suction, a defibrillator, anaesthesia and vital sign monitoring, plus a medical tent to provide a clean environment for surgery.

Global Medical Systems’ Alex Bushell said: “CompactOR offers a basic and robust portable operating theatre that enables doctors and nurses to perform basic life-saving surgical procedures. It can be used to treat common conditions such as cataracts through to more complex life-threatening conditions.

The self contained CompactOR is powered by solar energy, a small wind turbine and or a pedal generator.
