RyderHKS appoints new healthcare group leader

Paul Willetts, formerly assistant director for commissioning, facilities and planning at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust, has joined architects RyderHKS as healthcare group leader.

He began his 25 year career in the health service as a radiographer and has worked in a number of teaching hospitals as a clinician and senior NHS manager. As assistant director at South Tees he worked for seven years on the redevelopment of the James Cook University Hospital. This PFI funded £165 million capital scheme is one of the most complex major acute hospital PFI developments to be completed in recent years.

His experience includes healthcare planning, equipping, collating the concession agreement, commissioning and migration as well as post project evaluation and external liaison with a wide range of stakeholders and the media.

A regular speaker at health design conferences, he has also advised on a learning tool for future PFI projects published on the Department of Health website.

Paul Willets said: “Through my clinical experience I understand what’s important to clinicians as well as to NHS managers. My new role will involve representing the client view in the design team and advising clients on the most effective routes for them through the commissioning process.”

Mark Thompson, executive director of RyderHKS said: “We have a strong healthcare group, backed by expertise from HKS in the States, and we’re delighted Paul has joined us to bring a fresh perspective and experience to the team.”
