Portakabin has been officially recognised by BSI (the British Standards Institution) for its capability to work to Building Information Modelling Level 2 as a tier 1 designer/contractor in accordance with PAS1192-2.
The Government Construction Strategy, published in 2011, outlined the target of reducing the cost and carbon burden of public sector construction by up to 20%. To achieve this, BIM Level 2 is required on all centrally procured public sector projects, including those in the healthcare and education sectors.
Paul Scaife, BIM manager at Portakabin (pictured), noted: “Portakabin has been working to BIM Level 2 standard on projects for a number of years; tier 1 verification confirms our capability to engage on BIM Level 2-enabled projects at the capital delivery phase. This includes design and construction through to the asset handover.”
Building on the Government’s guidance, Portakabin has subsequently developed digital policies and protocols in line with the BIM mandate’s generic requirements for collaborative 3D modelling and related information management processes. Director, Steve Newell, added: “The benefits of BIM are generally very well known; other key advantages of working at BIM Level 2 mean we are operationally more efficient, and can develop schemes that are also optimised for safety during the design and construction phases prior to handing over a building.”
