Tenovus Cancer Care, the cancer treatment and support organisation whose scientists developed the use of breast cancer drug, Tamoxifen, and prostate cancer medication, Zoladex, and which already operates two mobile support units delivering chemotherapy and lymphoedema across Wales, is to build what is says will be the world’s biggest mobile chemotherapy unit for cancer patients in the Principality.
The organisation received £500,000 from Walk the Walk Worldwide, £172,000 from the Welsh Government, and £75,000 from Fairwood Trust, to fund the new unit’s construction and pay for its initial running costs as part of its ‘Closer to Home’ Appeal.
Tenovus Cancer Care said: “Our third mobile support unit will be over 60% bigger than the first. There will be space for seven patients to receive treatment simultaneously, and during its lifetime the unit could deliver over 125,000 treatments.”
People visiting the new mobile support unit will also benefit from a complete package of cancer treatment, support, and care. Patients will receive advice on diet, exercise, and managing stress, and how wellbeing plays a part in how well people respond to treatment and recover, and whether cancer recurs.
