It is incumbent on all employers/managers to develop and support their employees, whether through on-the-job mentoring, ongoing continuing professional development (CPD), or formal training opportunities. The onus rests with an organisation to improve an employee’s performance, and to help them gain the necessary level of knowledge and skills to productively, effectively, and profitably, perform their role. In the case of hospital engineering, estates, and FM functions, ongoing training and development is a key part of ensuring that competencies, skills, and knowledge, are maintained and current, so that staff and their actions remain compliant.
An organisation’s commitment to training and development can also be one of several significant factors in an employee’s choice of a new employer or role. It has been demonstrated that staff training and development contributes to ensuring that employees remain motivated, and, more so than ever, it’s a key element in staff retention. Job satisfaction, and an employee’s happiness in growing and developing through training, are vital to motivation, engagement, and positive morale.
